Using the “Fortune Teller” in Human Growth and Development

Purpose – Students must sort through the information in their head and organize it as they write into the correct squares. They are also kinesthetically involved as they fold and refold the organizer, keeping their attention and using more areas of the brain. When they are done, they may use it to practice the information alone or with a friend. Research shows that this active engagement in their note-taking produces better retention for all types of learners.

1. Cut out the “Fortune Teller” graphic organizer and fold into shape. Explain as the students fold that they will be adding information onto the sections of their organizer.

2. Label the four outer flaps with the four categories of health and wellness:
Physical:
Mental:
Social:
Emotional:

3. Label each of the eight triangles visible when the organizer is flexed with activities:
Playing a sport
Eating
Watching tv, etc.

4. Unfold the four inner flaps to reveal another set of eight triangles. List or draw ways in which the four areas of health and wellness are impacted by the activity on the other side of the flap.

Try these suggestions:

- Use the internet to find calorie information -- 3500 calories equals one pound.

- Challenge yourself – create two different activities in each category. How many activities impact all four categories?

- As there are two triangles for each category, try to list one activity with a positive impact and one with a negative impact for each category.

- Use color-coding to relate any interconnected ideas together.

- Draw or paste figures rather than just using words.

Fortune Teller gives repeated exposure to information in a fun way.
Cut along solid dark line of outermost square.
Fold all four corners toward center of back, matching corners in center.
From front, fold the new corners toward center front, matching corners in center.
Fold the new square in half.
Insert thumbs and forefingers under the four “flaps”.
Push outer corners together to form the “flowerets”, then flex fingers in and out to see both views.
Chose one label and unfold the “flap” to see the details beneath.
