The Parent Simulation Project
Objective: To understand the meaning of being responsible for “someone” else twenty-four hours a day seven days a week, forever.
4.0 Analyze roles and responsibilities of parenting. (FCSNS 15.1)
5.2.3 Examine the role of support systems in meeting human growth and development needs. (FCSNS 12.3.3)

Guidelines and Evaluation:
1. You will take care of your “baby” for a full week beginning _________________________
2. You will need to place your baby in “Gifford’s Day Care” a minimum of three of the school days. This will replicate what parents have to do and the extra time they must allow to take their baby to day care. You must arrive at school in time to check the “baby” in to the day care and remember to pick him/her up at the end of your day. You will need to sign them in and out of the day care.
3. If you have someone else who can care for the “baby” at home you may leave them at home
except for the three days you must bring them to school.
4. If you have to work or if you go out over the weekend you must provide care for the “baby.”
Be sure to whoever “takes care” of the “baby” initial the log to document the time.
5. We’ll figure what it would have cost in day care if you’d had to leave the “baby” in day care
during this period of time. We’ll use the current/usually charge per hour. ____________
6. You’ll each have a daily log in the baby book. You must account for 24 hours of each day in your log. Be accountable for the enter twenty four hours of each day.
7. This project is not to cause any disturbance in classes or in the hallway’s. It is not an excuse
to be tardy to class. Plan ahead and be prepared. These are “babies” not “toys’ for showing off.
8. On some days you’ll draw a situation or happening when you arrive in class. You must record this in your baby book and respond as to how the parent might have to deal with the situation or the feelings they might experience.
9. Loss of points may be assessed for:
Kidnapping – If you get the “baby” back unharmed points will be returned. This will only be assessed if it is determined that you the parent was negligent.
Abuse – If the “baby” is harmed the case will come before the “court” to determine if the
parent was negligent and if any penalties will be imposed.
10. Extra points can be earned back if the parent obtains some “counseling.” This may be shown by turning in a two page report on “How to be the Best parent I Can Be.” or “Disciplining Children Effectively.”
11. If the “baby” dies within the first two days we’ll replace, if it’s later than that we’ll consider
it a case of SIDS – A difficult experience for parents to deal with.
12. Evaluation of the project will include:
Approach to the project – Did you really try to follow the procedures? Honest effort to be responsible for the “baby.”
Log – Accurate account of the baby’s whereabouts & total cost of child care.
Recording of situations you drew in class.
Your written comments on what you Learned about “parenting.”
Loss of points for abuse, kidnapping, neglect etc.
Figure the cost of child care for this week.

Each part of the project represents a significant part of parenting –
Fish – Baby Jar or fish bowl – car seat/carrier
Fish food – formula/baby food Towel - Blanket
Water in container – messiness of baby’s at times – not always convenient
Ice Cream Bucket – car seat
