Complete the flowchart by filling in
the:
a. Circles with organs the food will pass through (beginning with
the mouth)
b. Squares with the mechanical action that occurs
c. Triangles with the digestive juices produced to break down food

Consider: Where do the nutrients
go when they leave the digestive system? How do they get there?
Does the digestion process change depending
upon what I eat?
Compare the calories from carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats. Which will give me more potential energy? Which
source is easiest to access? What happens to that potential energy
if it is not used?
If I starve my body, how do I continue
to get energy? What effect does this have on the body?
Research a nutritional deficiency and
its effect on the body. What foods contain this nutrient?
How many twinkies would it take to get
100% of my daily need for calcium, iron, Vitamin A and Vitamin C?
And what percent of my daily fat intake is this? How many excess
calories is this? How many pounds would I gain in a week if I continued
to eat this way?
Do the same calculations with your favorite
junk food!
