The Bridge program cycled through to the year 1997 but was discontinued due to staff and administrative changes. (Over three years, students consistently voted this section most popular of the 12 departments/sections; GPA’s rose; for a time Ingraham enjoyed increases in school size)
In 1998, an Academy of Travel and Tourism (AOTT) began at Ingraham HS. Family & Consumer Sciences teachers participated, instructing ‘Strategies for Success’ and ‘World Cuisine’ courses. Many students are now in this Academy. The ships docking at the Elliott Bay piers (and inspiring the original cruise ship simulation) now host students and teachers for visits and get-togethers.
Ingraham’s Family & Consumer Sciences Department now teaches the required ninth grade Health classes for the entire school
Seattle Schools has an urban affiliation for FCCLA. This allows 3800 students to participate in student leadership and attend local, state and national conferences.
A ProStart pilot I wrote in 2000 for three Seattle schools expanded to a fourth high school in 2002. Students participate in internships; receive scholarships to Johnson & Wales, WSU, CIA, Art Institute; have won National trips to Chicago and Denver for competition; and are mentored by restaurant staff, sponsors, and chefs.
I serve on the CASH/Washington Restaurant Association Board representing statewide high school family and consumer sciences programs.
In 2001, the District’s Academy Coordinator and I wrote the pilot for a Lodging Management Program to be integrated into AOTT.
Hospitality instructors have been certified at training sites in WA, CA, FL, NY, RI, CO, SC, OK.
Schools being remodeled are including Food Production/Culinary in their designs.
Epilogue
With ten years of 4-H in my past, as a teenager, I had many home-grown ideas about what should be taught in Family and Consumer Sciences and how it should look and feel as my future profession. Now widely known, these subjects and ideas promoted through our National FACSE Standards help to provide even more options for opportunity, excellence, FCCLA leadership, and community and post-secondary partnerships. A hospitality theme teamed with economic development for our city, port, and state has provided an energizing set of opportunities not just for one school and a few students but for many.
