Results and Impact

  • I was hired as a School-to-Work Specialist for our district, and left teaching.

  • Washington State developed Pathways, Projects, Portfolios, and Post-secondary Plans as part of education reform.  I worked to understand, guide, and train teachers in accomplishing these reforms.

  • A Health and Human Services Pathway model I originated at Ingraham became the district’s model.

  • As 1999 President of the FACSE section/Washington Vocational Association, I brought the first Hospitality Pre-Conference to our state. Fifty-two people participated.

With ten years of 4-H in my past, as a teenager, I had many home-grown ideas about what should be taught in Family and Consumer Sciences and how it should look and feel as my future profession. Now widely known, these subjects and ideas promoted through our National FACSE Standards help to provide even more options for opportunity, excellence, FCCLA leadership, and community and post-secondary partnerships. A hospitality theme teamed with economic development for our city, port, and state has provided an energizing set of opportunities not just for one school and a few students but for many.
