Southwestern Food Factory

Created by: Becky Newell

Results and Impact

The Factory has impacted more than 1,800 students since the inception.  Most have worked in some phase of food service (grocery, fast food, waitress/waiter, bussing, etc.) during the high school years.  Today, two have become grocery managers; several are teachers; some are restaurant managers.  Just this spring, one of the teachers E-mailed a request—since he had learned economics in Mrs. Newell’s class, could I please send him the name of some of my resources.  He was finishing an economics unit with his social studies classes!

The Factory has donated about six dozen baby blankets to the community health services and women’s shelters in our community.  The blanket fabric was purchased with Factory profits and blankets were constructed as a way of giving back to the community.

The Factory curriculum remains cutting edge today.  Granted it has been expanded, refined, tweaked, and generally overhauled many times since that long-ago semester in the early ‘80’s.  But it is, perhaps, more relevant today than years ago.
