Description:
This
project-based course equips students with skills and attitudes necessary
for a successful high school career and transition into a post-secondary
environment by investigating trends in careers and career opportunities.
Focusing on the impact of today's choices on tomorrow's possibilities,
topics to be addressed include: exploration of personal aptitudes;
interests and goals; life and career exploration and planning; planning
and building employability skills; transferring school skills to life and
work; decision making and organizational skills; and life-long learning.
Indiana Core 40 is strongly emphasized as preparation for education beyond
high school. A one-day career shadowing experience is arranged for each
student during the semester.
Standards
and Competencies:
1.
Explain,
demonstrate, and integrate processes of thinking, communication,
leadership, and management in order to apply family and consumer sciences
knowledge and skills.
1.1. Explain and demonstrate components of directed thinking, particularly
critical thinking, creative thinking, and reasoning.
1.2. Explain and demonstrate components, roles, functions, and styles of
effective communication in family, community, and career settings.
1.3. Explain and demonstrate collaborative leadership that encourages
participation and respect for the ideas, perspectives, and contributions
of all group members.
1.4. Explain and demonstrate management and problem-solving processes to
address problems, make decisions, and accomplish tasks and
responsibilities in family, career and community settings.
1.5. Examine and demonstrate interrelationships among thinking,
communication, leadership, and management processes and their applications
to making decisions and addressing individual, family, community, and
workplace issues.

3.5. Evaluate high school career plans in light of decisions about career
paths and options.
4. Develop
basic skills and personal qualities needed for success in family,
community, and workplace settings.
4.1. Demonstrate responsibility, teamwork, and integrity.
4.2. Apply reading, writing, mathematics, listening, and speaking skills
in family and workplace settings.
4.3. Demonstrate respect for multiple diversities with sensitivity to
anti-bias and equity in gender, age, race, culture, ethnicity,
socio-economic status, and exceptionalities.
4.4. Demonstrate the ability to transfer basic skills and personal
